Day 11: Choose Truth Over Lies

Lie: My heart will never heal.

Truth: Jesus came to heal my broken heart.

Scripture: Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Today Tricia Snyder Underwood opens her heart and shares tender details. We pray you are touched deeply and allow God to touch your heart, holes are all:

As a child I experienced physical, mental, and emotional abuse, and have only recently started uncovering memories of sexual abuse, as well. The reality is that my heart was broken at an early age. It was filled with so many holes, or empty places. Unknowingly, I set out on a mission to fill these holes. I believe it’s just another law of physics that when you have a broken heart, you seek healing. The problem is, I began looking in all the wrong places: my husband, my job, my kids. Sadly, I even sought healing from some things clearly outside God’s will for my life. My attempt to heal my own broken heart led to even more holes, as each attempt inevitably came up short and left another set of holes, leading to more frustration and pain.

I finally bought into the enemy’s lie that my heart would never heal. I wallowed in grief, shame, and guilt for a many years, feeling hopeless. But then I heard my Pastor say something recently during a sermon that brought me freedom. “God isn’t angry with you”, he said, “Yes, he hates the sin, but His wrath was poured out on Jesus on the cross 2000 years ago. He loves you! He isn’t angry with you. He loves you!!” He shared Romans 8:38-39 with us: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Suddenly, it occurred to me that if God isn’t angry with me and He still loves me, despite what I’ve done (or what’s been done to me), then He alone can be trusted to heal all my brokenness.

Jesus came not just to give us eternal life, but to heal THIS life~ including our broken hearts! I gave Him my heart, holes and all, that day. And He is filling them, one by one, in ways I never could! My heart will be healed!!
Luke 4:18-19 (AMP): “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favor of God abound greatly].”

Prayer/Further Study:

Lord, You created us with tender hearts. Often this world comes with hurt and that creates brokenness. You see, you know, you hear our cry. You are the One who draws near the brokenhearted and saves! Draw near to hearts that hurting. Help us lift the deepest wounds up to You. Touch and heal. Touch and heal. In Jesus name, Amen
