“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:5

Hi! My name is Donna and I am a Christmasaholic.

My halls have been decked and the boughs of holly abound outside…..all since November 16th! The familiar carols of the season have been playing for weeks.  I am frequently accused of “skipping” Thanksgiving but I am very thankful that I am able to begin celebrating Christmas early.

I simply love every aspect of Christmas…but my favorite part? The gifts!

Yep, you read that right… I love the gifts!

Many moons ago, I learned that one of my love languages is gifts. Large or small, homemade or bought…gifts fill my love tank to full.

One of my favorite memories of gifts involves quite a bit of fur. I am an 80’s child and had asked for a fur coat one Christmas…where are my 80’s girls? They were big back then! Finding the large box under the tree, with the sounds of ripping paper, I quickly saw fur sticking out of the top of the box! My excitement multiplied as I reached into the box and pulled out…my fur…bear.  Silently devastated, I thanked my parents for the soft and cuddly bear. A few gifts later, I did get my fur coat. But, I’ll let you in on a secret.. I still have the bear…but the coat is long gone. Bear has become a family treasure in my home and I learned a valuable lesson that day. My parents always had my best interest at heart and knew me better than I knew myself.

God knows me better than I know myself, too. So, He gave me the gift of Grace. (Ephesians 4:7)

I love the gifts!

Each year, I carefully unpack the special decorations that I packed the year before. Some of those are new but quite a few of them are beginning to have some age to them. There is one gift that holds a special place in my heart. It is a small nativity given to me by my grandmother. I kept it in my wooden shadow box, careful not to knock it over when friends would come for a visit. Gently, unbound from the tissue paper and displayed high above little hands, it too has become a family treasure.  My grandmother taught me the importance of family treasures. My grandmother taught me about the importance of family, too.

God teaches me about treasure as well. He gives me the gift of Heaven, as a Child of the King! (1 John 3:2)

I love the gifts!

I remember going to her home each year to visit. My best friend, Lisa and I were always welcomed with open arms. “Miss Mattie” was a widow in our church, home bound and sometimes distant from her family. Shopping out of the Avon book, “Miss Mattie” would gift us with an ornament each year. These special teddy bears donned the freshly cut trees as I grew up. Now,  out from under my parents wings, my kids place them gently on our tree…year after year.  “Miss Mattie” taught me to love on people, young and old. She also taught me the importance of loving beyond barriers that the world may place on us.

God teaches me to love, too. He sent me the gift of Jesus as an example. (Hebrews 5:9)

I love the gifts!

The JOY marquee  below was a gift to myself! Come on girls, you do it too! But it is the perfect reminder of what God has called me to be and to do… It is a lifestyle, not just a moment in your life.

Jesus first, Yourself last, and Others in between.

Joy has taught me that even in pain there can be peace, that God is good even when it may seem bad, and that happiness is not relative to your circumstances.

God sent His one and only son to be the JOY of the world, to be the Prince of Peace, and to be the Gift!! (Isaiah 9:6)
